Bank: AfDB grants Burundi US$ 2.7m for power project

The African Development Bank (AfDB) will grant Burundi US$ 2.7 million geared towards supporting a power project in the city of Bujumbura, according to Celestin Nduwamungu, general director of the country’s regulatory water and power supply office (REGIDESO).
The project will mainly cover districts of the northern periphery of the Burundi an capital city of Bujumbura, said to be in “emergency situation”, according to a high-ranking official of the state-run energy and water supply company.
Lack of lighting on the streets and households in the districts on the periphery of Bujumbura is said to be the main cause of high insecurity in the evenings.
Those districts are often affected by cholera and other diarrhoeal diseases due to lack of appropriate sanitary conditions.
The REGIDESO general director said poor conditions of living and lack of hygiene would soon be resolved in districts covered by the BAD-financing project by late 2010.
